TOP FOLK ROCK SONGS
70Determining the top Folk Rock Songs is not an argument that can be won or lost. Rather, it is a lively discussion between friends and musicians to be explored again and again. Folk Rock was built on the exceptional songwriting of Bob Dylan and the dynamic interpretations of the “The Byrds.” Subsequently, numerous artists and bands have continued to expand this genre into the vibrant art form that it remains today.
I have decided to let subjectivity and impulse take sway here and give you the first ten top folk rock songs that pop into my head. Because, as I learned long ago, your first answer is almost invariably right.
At number ten, I have “Tangled Up In Blue” by Bob Dylan. This is classic Dylan story telling at it's best.
Listed a number nine, “Maggie May” by Rod Stewart. Another great lyric augmented by elements of Irish and English folk music.
“Suite, Judy Blue Eyes” by “Crosby Still and Nash” ranks in at number eight. This song further expanded the folk rock genre and added in a new generation of fans.
Coming in at number seven, “For What It's Worth” by “Buffalo Springfield.” This is brilliant composition seething with the political overtones of the times.
“Subterranean Homesick Blues” by Bob Dylan lands at number six. Bob Dylan strikes again with superior poetry delivered in a rap-like style and cadence.
My fifth selection is “The Sounds of Silence” by “Simon & Garfunkel.” Paul Simon crafted a dark and foreboding masterpiece to frame their unique vocal talents.
“California Dreamin'” by the “Mamas and Papas” resides in fourth place. John Phillips vaulted his mixed quartet to the top of the charts with this iconic classic.
The third best folk song is “Turn! Turn! Turn!” by “The Byrds.” The Old Testament never sounded better!
“Like a Rolling Stone” by Bob Dylan ranks second. At the time of the song's release, Dylan was greatly criticized for “going electric.” However, we quickly adjusted and got on-board with the new sound and expanded horizons.
And, the best folk rock song is, “Mr. Tambourine Man” by the Byrds. It's hard to beat a Dylan composition performed by the best folk rock band of all time. Particularly when Roger McGuinn leads in with that great Rickenbacker electric twelve string guitar.
